Totton & Eling to Mark 80th Anniversary of VJ Day with Community Events
Totton & Eling Town Council will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, the day that marked the end of the Second World War, with a series of special community events this August.
VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) is observed on 15 August, the date in 1945 when Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allies, effectively bringing an end to World War II. It is a day to reflect on the immense sacrifices made by those who served, including those who fought in the Far East where conditions were particularly harsh, and to honour the contribution of the countless civilians who supported the war effort from home.
To mark this important anniversary, the Town Council invites residents to a weekend of remembrance and community reflection:
A Memorial Service will take place at the Totton & Eling War Memorial on Thursday 15 August at 6pm, paying tribute to the brave men and women who served in the conflict and those who supported them.
The evening continues with the Lamps of Peace Parade at 8:45pm at Totton & Eling Community Centre. This peaceful event will feature a symbolic lantern procession followed by music and time for community gathering.
On Saturday 17 August, a free Afternoon Tea will be held at the Community Centre from 1:30pm to 4pm, including music and a light-hearted quiz—offering a more informal setting to bring people together in remembrance and appreciation.
