Give Your Pumpkin a Second Life This Halloween

Give your Pumpkin a Second Life This Halloween

Every year, thousands of pumpkins are bought, carved and displayed for Halloween, only to be thrown away shortly afterwards. But with a little planning, your pumpkin can go much further than a spooky doorstep decoration.

Before you start carving this year’s Halloween masterpiece, think about how you can make the most of every part of your pumpkin and reduce food waste at the same time.

Don’t Throw Away the Seeds

When scooping out your pumpkin, separate the seeds from the flesh and give them a good wash. Once dried, they can be roasted with your favourite seasoning to create a healthy and delicious snack.

Alternatively, save a few seeds and store them ready for spring. You could grow your own pumpkins next year.

Turn Pumpkin Flesh into Tasty Meals

The inside of a pumpkin is often discarded, but it’s packed with flavour and can be used in a wide range of recipes.

Why not try making:

  • Homemade pumpkin soup
  • Fresh pumpkin bread
  • Pumpkin cake or muffins
  • Creamy pumpkin risotto
  • Pumpkin curry
  • A homemade pumpkin spice latte or cold foam

You can find endless recipes for pumpkins online or visit your local library and take out a cookbook for more ideas.

Using the flesh not only reduces waste but also helps you get even more value from your Halloween purchase.

Help Local Wildlife

As temperatures drop, food can become harder for wildlife to find. A leftover pumpkin can provide an important food source for a variety of animals. Consider:

  • Turning it into a bird feeder
  • Leaving pieces out for squirrels, foxes, badgers and other wildlife
  • Donating it to a local farm or animal sanctuary if they accept pumpkin donations

Always place pumpkin in suitable locations and remove any decorations, paint, candles or wax before offering it to wildlife.

Compost It or Recycle It

If your pumpkin is no longer suitable for cooking or feeding wildlife, make sure it doesn’t end up in landfill.

Pumpkins can be:

  • Added to a home compost bin or heap
  • Placed in your food waste recycling bin

This allows the nutrients to be returned to the environment rather than going to waste.

Organic matter that decomposes in land fill releases methane and takes up valuable space.

Can you think of any other ways you can reuse your pumpkin this year?
