No Tricks When It Comes to Safety
Maintaining safety is an important part in your Halloween planning process. If you choose to go trick or treating with children this year, here are some of the safety steps to consider.
One of the biggest safety considerations when trick or treating is visibility as children are twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle on Halloween. Many trick-or-treating activities take place after dark with dark costumes. Adding reflective tape to costumes and treat bags, or carrying glow sticks or torches help children be seen more easily by drivers and other pedestrians.
When planning costumes, face paint can be a safer choice than masks. Masks can restrict vision and make it harder for children to see obstacles, roads and other people. If using face paint, choose non-toxic products and remember to remove all makeup before bedtime to avoid skin irritation.
Before heading out, plan your route and stick to familiar, well-lit streets and pathways. If older children are going trick-or-treating without adult supervision, agree in advance where they will be going, who they will be with and what time they are expected home. Having a clear plan can provide reassurance for both parents and children.
It’s also important to remind children about personal safety. Make sure they know never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle, regardless of how friendly the person may seem. Encourage them to stay with their group and tell a trusted adult if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe at any time.
While the temptation to sample sweets straight away can be strong, children should wait until they return home before eating any treats. This gives parents or carers an opportunity to check them first, manage any food allergies and ensures everyone can enjoy their treats safely.
Drivers should take extra care during Halloween, slowing down where appropriate and remain particularly vigilant in residential areas. Children wearing dark costumes can be difficult to spot, especially in poor weather or low light conditions.
Scare responsibly and stay safe!
